Initiation

A ritual death and rebirth that transforms the initiate's identity and grants access to hidden knowledge.

Initiation is the controlled induction of death-and-rebirth experience within a ritual container. The initiate symbolically dies to their former identity and is reborn with new knowledge, status, and responsibility. Traditional societies understood that certain transformations cannot occur gradually — they require a decisive break, a crossing of threshold. Modern life largely lacks initiatory containers, leading people to seek pseudo-initiations through extreme experiences. In film, initiation narratives follow the hero's journey pattern: separation from ordinary world, ordeal in the special world, return with boon.
