Gnosticism

Gnosis

Direct experiential knowledge of divine truth that liberates the soul from the prison of material existence.

Gnosis (Greek for 'knowledge') is not intellectual understanding but direct spiritual experience — a sudden recognition of one's true nature and origin. The Gnostic does not believe in salvation; they know it through immediate experience. Gnosis is often described as 'remembering' what was always already known but forgotten upon entering material existence. The moment of gnosis shatters all constructed reality and cannot be undone. In film, gnosis moments are depicted as sudden awakenings: Neo seeing the Matrix code, Truman touching the wall of his dome, the protagonist realizing the nature of their imprisonment.
