Sparagmos

Ritual dismemberment — the tearing apart of the god or sacrificial victim as a transformative act.

In the Dionysian mysteries, sparagmos refers to the ritual tearing apart of a sacrificial animal (or symbolically, the god Dionysus himself). This dismemberment precedes reconstitution — the scattered parts are gathered and the god is reborn. Psychologically, sparagmos represents the necessary destruction of the old self before new integration can occur. It is violent, chaotic, and terrifying. In film, sparagmos appears as the protagonist being literally or figuratively torn apart: the dismemberment of identity, relationships, or body that precedes any possibility of renewal.
