Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Every grimoire tradition warns of the same trap: the book of forbidden power is not a tool, it is a mouth. It offers exactly the thing the soul cannot let go of, and the taking is the being taken. The Darkhold does this to Wanda with clinical precision. It shows her a version of herself who has her sons, and from that instant she is no longer the author of her actions. She calls it a spell. It is a possession. She corrupts every reality she reaches, leaving each Darkhold blackened and its wielder dead, because the book uses the caster as fuel and discards the ash.

Strange is offered the identical bargain. To fight Wanda he "dreamwalks" into the corpse of a dead variant of himself, animating it with the souls of the damned. The film stages this as its most explicitly demonic sequence: a dead sorcerer, cloaked in screaming spirits, a book that costs the reader their life. Raimi is showing that hero and villain reach for the same cursed volume. The difference is not the power. It is that Strange finally puts it down.

Jung called individuation the work of meeting every disowned part of yourself and refusing to let any of them run the show unseen. Strange's multiverse is that hall of mirrors made literal. He meets a Strange who went too far and had to be executed by his own order. He meets Sinister Strange, a variant so consumed by the same longing for Christine that he became a monster living in a shattered world. These are not other men. They are his shadow wearing his face, showing him what his own grasping becomes when it is not integrated.

The film's real climax is not a fight but a recognition. Strange asks a dying alternate self whether he was happy, and the answer is what turns him. He refuses to become Sinister Strange. He tells Christine he loves her and then lets her go. Wanda, by contrast, never meets her shadow as shadow. She only meets her wish and mistakes it for herself. The one who integrates the darkness survives. The one who is swallowed by it collapses a mountain onto her own head.
