Alchemy names two principles that must be joined to make the Stone: sulphur, the hot fixed soul of a thing, and mercury, the volatile spirit that moves and unites. Galo Thymos is mercury. He is motion without direction, a firefighter who fights fire, all spirit and no fixed center, forever quenching what he does not understand. Lio Fotia is sulphur. He is the Burnish leader, the burning soul, fixed in his conviction and radiating heat, but trapped and cooling toward death because sulphur alone cannot save itself. The film's real engine is not Galo versus Lio. It is Galo learning to stop extinguishing Lio and start joining him.

Watch the two moments the operation completes. First, Galo performs mouth-to-mouth to reignite a Lio frozen nearly to death, breathing fire back into the body he was trained to cool. The mercury does not conquer the sulphur. It revives it. Then, in the finale, the two pilots merge their mechs into a single machine, Galo de Lion, and the fire that the world spent the entire film suppressing becomes the only force capable of stopping the planet's destruction. That is the coniunctio, the alchemical wedding, made into a giant robot. The Stone was always the marriage of the two things they told you to keep apart.

Kray is a textbook Demiurge. He rules a bright, ordered world and presents himself as its savior, the man who will lift the worthy off a dying Earth. But his order runs on captured light. His engine, the Parnassus, is powered by Burnish flame, which is to say the divine spark forcibly harvested from living people who are kept sedated in the freezing so their fire can be drained. The Gnostics said exactly this about the material cosmos: a false ruler builds a beautiful cage and powers it on stolen pneuma, telling the captives that the cage is the world entire.

Lio and the Burnish are the pneumatics, the ones who carry the spark and remember it is theirs. Their liberation is not conquest. It is gnosis, the recognition that the "mutation" the Demiurge feared was the flame of a higher order trying to reach them. When the Burnish finally release their fire freely rather than having it extracted, the planet does not burn. It is reborn. The fire was never the apocalypse. The suppression was.
