Spider Baby

Jung described the psyche as layered like geology, with the personal self resting on older strata, the collective unconscious, the archaic and animal inheritance that precedes the individual ego. The Merrye curse is that map run in reverse and made literal: the children fall backward through their own phylogenetic history, shedding the acquired self to arrive at the ancestral organism underneath. Virginia, who plays at being a spider and catches her human prey in string she treats as web, is not simply insane. She is the ego dissolved back into an older pattern the body still carries, the predator that civilization is a thin coat of paint over.

Bruno is the film's fragile ego-function, the conscious will straining to contain what the family unconscious keeps producing. His whole performance is the labor of integration under impossible strain, holding the archaic contents so they do not spill out and destroy everyone. The relatives, by contrast, are consciously respectable and unconsciously ravenous, and the film knows which is more dangerous. The children's regression is honest. It wears its hunger on the surface. The cousins' greed is the shadow that still calls itself normal, and that is the true degeneracy the title points at.

The Merrye mansion is an alembic sealed against the world, a closed vessel in which a corrupted substance, the bloodline, has been left to putrefy across generations. Alchemy calls this stage nigredo, the blackening, the rot that must be reached before anything can be made new. The house is nigredo made architecture: decaying, cut off, breeding its darkness inward with no outlet, the family material turning ever blacker in its isolation.

The film's ending is the operation's only possible completion. Bruno, having kept his promise as long as flesh allows, sets the house ablaze with the family and himself inside it. Fire is the alchemist's agent of final purification, the calcinatio that burns corruption down to ash so the cycle can close. There is no gold at the end of this opus, only cleansing. Bruno chooses the flame because some substances cannot be transmuted, only released, and love, at the last, is willing to burn the vessel rather than let its contents loose upon the world.
