Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Buddhist philosophy names this structure pratityasamutpada, dependent origination. Nothing arises independently. Every condition is already the child of a prior condition, and every effect becomes the parent of the next.

Watch how the causal chain actually assembles. Ryu is deaf because of an illness, poor because of the deafness, desperate because of the illness consuming his sister, criminal because of the desperation. He kidnaps Yu-sun not out of cruelty but because the organ black market robbed him and he had no other move. Yu-sun drowns not because Ryu abandons her but because a child near water and a moment of divided attention is already a complete tragedy waiting to close. Dong-jin's grief and his revenge are not reactions to evil, they are the next conditions in a chain that was already running before any named character entered it. The film ends in massacre not because hatred wins but because the chain, once in motion, exhausts its links before it exhausts its killers.

Park never provides a scene where one clear wrong choice could have broken everything. That absence is the teaching. The film is the pratityasamutpada as cinema.

In Gnostic cosmology, the kenoma is the empty world, the material realm ruled by Archons, blind administrators who do not create evil so much as they foreclose every exit from it. The Pleroma, the fullness, is structurally unavailable.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a kenotic film. The Archons here wear no supernatural robes. They are a healthcare system that prices organs out of reach, a labor market that leaves a deaf man with no options, an underground economy that robs the desperate twice. When Ryu and his girlfriend devise the kidnapping, the scene carries no menace, only the blank pragmatism of people solving a problem inside a world that has sealed every other door.

Dong-jin's grief contains the same Gnostic signature. He is a man whose love had nowhere to ascend. Yu-sun is gone and the world that took her offers him nothing, no ritual, no meaning, no container for what he carries. His violence is not a fall from grace. There was never a grace available to fall from.

For the revenge cycle completed: Oldboy closes the trilogy with myth. Lady Vengeance turns the same engine toward grace. For the Buddhist chain without vengeance: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring shows karma cycling toward stillness rather than massacre.
